“The Role of Social Studies in a Democratic Society”

Plan now to attend the state’s largest and most comprehensive social studies professional development opportunity. As social studies educators strive to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to become effective citizens, quality professional development to meet the demands of the ever-changing classroom has never been more crucial.
Three sets of workshops will address:
· Teaching for Social Justice and Human Rights
· The Economy
· Citizenship and the Democratic Process
· Technology and Mass Media
· Community Involvement and Service Learning
· Effective Instructional Strategies
· New Jersey Social Studies Core Content Standards (2009 still being developed)
The program: 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. with registration, breakfast and exhibitor displays. The keynote speakers include University of Pennsylvania Historian Walter McDougall. A buffet including a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, drinks and desserts will be served for lunch. The conference will conclude by 2:30 p.m.
General Registration fee: $50
The registration fee has been reduced to $40 for members and $50 for non-members. Annual NJCSS membership is $25. For $65 you can have a year-long membership plus a fantastic day of professional development and sharing with your colleagues on October 27th. For a special district discount rate of $100, up to five teachers who are NJCSS members from any single school district can attend the conference.

The New Jersey Council for the Social Studies is a professional organization for the advancement of the social studies in schools and colleges, affiliated with National Council for the Social Studies, the New Jersey Education Association, and the New Jersey Social Studies Supervisor Association.
